Hard to believe that the World Equestrian Games was a year ago. Kentucky busily prepared for four years by; widening roads, improving the Kentucky Horse Park, building gorgeous indoor arenas... and now it's over. I am hoping that the WEG in Kentucky changed the world, but I know one thing is true... the World Equestrian Games has changed Kentucky.

Nancy & Chris June 4th, 2011 Wedding

Nancy & Chris got married on their picturesque family farm in Brendenburg, Kentucky. Nancy, being a horse girl, had always dreamed of riding her horse Addition on her wedding day as part of the ceremony. Nancy and Addition had been part of each others lives for over twenty years. Not only did they grow up together and barrel race together, but they had that unmistakable bond that all horse girls dream about having with their special horse. Nancy's dream wedding would not be the same without her horse Addition sharing this part of her life with him. Because old age has settled in Addition's body, taking his best friend Nancy to start a new life with Chris was to be his final act of love for her. The moment Nancy left Addition's saddle was the last time she would ever sit upon his back, as this was their final ride together. Her faithful horse and best friend will now be retired forever.

When I saw Nancy come over the hill riding her beautiful black horse, I had to hold back the tears... Nancy was letting go of one life and beginning another with Chris. Nancy and Chris thank you so much for including me in such a beautiful moment of your lives. We are deeply honored.

Rolex Kentucky 2011 Cross Country Day

The weather held out for the 2011 Cross Country Day at the Rolex KY three day event. However, it did rain abundantly in Kentucky prior to Saturdays' event leaving behind soggy grounds and a trail of mud. All were blessed as the sun shined on CCX day and the temps soared to nearly 75 degrees. I was so grateful this year that all horses and riders were not harmed at this year's event. THANK GOD. Unfortunately, a few falls were recorded. Here are some of my images from an unfortunate fall of Kate Brown and Mojito at the Head of the Lake.

The first duck of the lake was a bit bumpy for the pair but both seemed to regain balance as they prepared to take on the second duck.

The second jump was where the team had a bad fall. I hate to witness a fall, but thankfully they were ok.

Hawaii 2010 was a honeymoon of a lifetime!

December 2010, my husband and I decided it was time for our "official" honeymoon. Jeff and I have been married for over 7 years and despite our many trips all over the globe, did not have our honeymoon until recently. We visited both Oahu and The Big Island, and went on many exciting adventures. We visited Pearl Harbor, saw black sand beaches, volcanos from the helicopter from the doors off tour, rain forests, went snorkeling, spent some time on Pipeline beach, went horseback riding on the North Shore, and saw a magical sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea. Please enjoy some of my favorite photos of our romantic dream vacation.

A few weeks ago, I was asked by the Executive Director of Georgetown college Equine scholarship program, to give a lecture on equine photography. We decided that we should do some live demonstrations to accommodate the lecture since some of us are visual learners.

Goodbye Niles Allen-Jenkins

In November 2007, after the loss of my beloved dog Spike to a six-year battle with cancer, the Bluegrass Barkery and I teamed up to help raise money for canine cancer research. Spike had only been gone less than a month when I found myself standing in the kitchen of the Clay Avenue store taking pictures of patient dogs along with an even more patient Santa, Jim Harvey. I felt like I was standing in a dream as I was still in such great mourning over the loss of Spike and taking pictures to honor her death, did not seem real to me. Dog after dog and picture after picture, my day was moving along as usual with bouncy dogs and wagging tails; that is until I saw Niles. I had turned my head to glance into the store to see how many people were standing in line waiting for photos, when I noticed a large elderly greyhound standing quietly by his owner’s side. The main door to the Barkery was open as I saw them in near silhouette form. I could see from a glance that Niles was an older dog (one of the first that I had seen all day long). At that moment the room was silent and thoughts of my old dog Spike came flooding back to me. Spike was one day shy of her 14^th birthday when she passed away; she has always looked so young and so strong up until six months before her death. The cancer and her diabetes had taken a toll on her once beautifully muscled body. I had to look away from Niles as I felt my eyes well up in tears, somehow he and Spike felt like one dog. As the afternoon rolled on, Niles found his way into the little make shift studio at the Barkery to have his photos taken with Santa. I stood in the corner filling out orders all the while I had one ear listening to Niles’s owner Robert, talk about Niles health. Robert talked about all the vet appointments, different medications, modifying the house, etc. So many of the same things my husband and I did for our baby girl Spike. So many similarities were stacking up for Niles and Spike, that Niles immediately found a special place in my heart. I remember clearly how Robert came over to pick out his selection of photos for printing and through the tears that were now streaming down my face; I offered him the entire CD of all the photos taken. I knew in my heart that time had become precious for the two. I think in death that we truly learn how precious life is, how precious time with those we love is. That was where my journey with Niles began. We spent many years in studio sessions at my house along with Santa photos at the Bluegrass Barkery. I always looked forward to petting Niles beautiful soft gray coat, and smelling his natural baby-powder-like scent. Niles was a special dog. He lived to the age of fifteen, an age that is unheard of for greyhounds. I know in my heart that the love of his owners kept Niles alive. Next to their lives, love was the most beautiful thing they shared together. Goodbye sweet Niles, may Spike be there greet you as you leave this life behind and race off toward Rainbow Bridge.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.   When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.  There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.  There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.   All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.  The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.   They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.   You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.   Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....   Author unknown...

Edward Gal takes home three Gold Medals at the World Equestrian Games

Freestyle Win Gives Gal Three Gold Medals at Dressage World Championships, Presented by Alltech

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lexington, Ky., Oct. 1, 2010 – In an historic sweep, Dutch rider Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas captured three gold medals at the Dressage World Championships, presented by Alltech, part of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Friday night, in front of a sold-out crowd at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Main Stadium, he won the Grand Prix Freestyle with a score of 91.8 percent.

Earlier in the week, Gal and “Totilas” earned the gold medal in the Grand Prix Special and were members of the gold-medal-winning team from the Netherlands.

The Grand Prix Freestyle’s top placings mirrored those of the Grand Prix Special, with Laura Bechtolsheimer of Great Britain capturing the silver medal with Mistral Hojris (85.35%), and Steffen Peters of the United States taking bronze on Ravel (84.90%). Peters, with two medals now, is the only U.S. rider ever to earn an individual medal at a World Equestrian Games. The three top riders also finished the team Grand Prix on Sept. 28-29 in the same order.

Before the medals ceremony, announcer Brian O’Connor brought Gal into the arena to thank him for taking dressage in an “unbelievably new direction. … You are in charge of what’s happening worldwide in dressage,” O’Connor said.

Linda Zang, president of the ground jury, discussed her impressions of the top three horses: “They’re actually, to me, three totally different types of horses. Totilas is a horse that shows so much power, but at the same time is very easy and seems very light. I think Edward does an amazing job to be able to sit and keep a horse with so much power and energy into a frame and work happily with him. Laura’s horse, for me, has a lot more power and is a very big horse. And Steffen has a different kind of horse. It’s a horse that is very elastic and soft and has a different kind of harmony. All three of them have harmony.”

Gal, who came into the World Games highly touted, said he was relieved that he and his horse lived up to the expectations.

“When I came here, I knew I could do it, but it also has to happen. And then it’s quite difficult, and there was, of course, a lot of pressure on me because everyone expected it,” he said.

Peters noted that he dedicated the freestyle ride to his fellow U.S. rider Courtney King-Dye, who suffered a head injury after a riding accident in March. Peters wore a protective helmet in his celebratory victory lap aboard Ravel.

Also, during the post-medals ceremony press conference, Gal said, “It is not a rumor” that Totilas has been bred to Brentina, an Olympic and WEG medalist and a World Cup titlist.

Nations represented in the Grand Prix Freestyle were the Netherlands, Great Britain, the United States, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Austria, Poland and Switzerland. Judges were Zang (United States), Mary Seefried (Australia), Ghislain Fouarge (the Netherlands), Evi Eisenhardt (Germany), and Maribel Alonso (Mexico).

Attendance on Friday was 46,496, including a sold-out Main Stadium of 25,00 for the Grand Prix Freestyle. Thursday's total attendance was 34,211.

Dutch Team Wins Gold Medal For First Time At Dressage World Championships, presented by Alltech

Lexington, Ky., Sept. 28 — The teams from the Netherlands and Great Britain each did something they’ve never done before in the Dressage World Championships, presented by Alltech, at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

The Netherlands won the team gold medal (229.74) for the first time ever, and Great Britain won the team silver medal (224.67), the first team medal they’ve ever won in the World Games.

Germany earned the team bronze medal (220.59), marking the first time they have not won the team gold medal since 1970.

The United States finished close behind in fourth (218.12).

As expected, superstar Moorlands Totilas, with Edward Gal, led the Dutch team to victory by topping the individual standings with a score of 84.04 percent. Teammates Imke Schellekens-Bartels, on Hunter Douglas Sunrise, and Hans Peter Minderhoud, on Exquis Nadine, provided scores of 73.44 percent and 72.25 percent to secure the gold medal.

Both of their scores became absolutely necessary this morning when their fourth teammate, Adelinde Cornelissen, on Jerich Parzival, was eliminated by the ground jury because the horse had blood visible in his saliva. Immediate examination found only a small cut on the tip of his tongue. Cornelissen rode Jerich Parzival in the awards ceremony and received her gold medal.

“It has been a difficult but exciting day for all of us,” said Gal. “We have mixed feelings and have had a great many tears. On one side, we are very happy to finally win the gold medal, but on one side we are certainly very sad for Adelinde.”

Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistal Hojris propelled the British team to their silver medal by scoring 82.51 percent, a performance that put her second individually. “It was definitely the best test and the best score of my life,” she said. “I’ve never been able to ride him so full of energy and really relaxed before.”

Teammates Carl Hester, on Liebling II, Maria Eilberg, on Two Sox, and Fiona Bigwood, on Wie-Atlantico Ymas, backed up Bechtolsheimer’s outstanding score.

“British dressage has been waiting for a superstar like Laura,” said Hester, a British team member for more than 20 years. “I think the other three of us feel our horses couldn’t have gone any better, and we’re very proud.”

Isabell Werth, the former World Champion and Olympic gold medalist, led the German team, scoring 75.40 percent on Warum Nicht. She has been a German team member for more than 20 years, and this is the first time Germany has not won the team gold medal at the World Championships since 1970. She noted that this was the first World Championship start for her three teammates.

“We needed a lot more points. We did a good job, but Laura did a super job. The Dutch and the British were just better this time, and we have to work harder,” said Werth.

Stephen Clarke, of Great Britain, the president of the ground jury who judged at C, had high praise for the riders in the Dressage World Championships. “I think the level of riding was fantastic. They all really took risks and made it exciting to watch and for us to judge. It was a real nail-biter, especially from where I was,” he said.

The Dressage World Championships, presented by Alltech, continue tomorrow (Sept. 29) with the Grand Prix Special, after which individual medals will be presented. The top 30 riders in the Grand Prix will go forward to the Grand Prix Special. Dressage concludes with the musical freestyle on Friday night.

Monday’s attendance was 12,115. Tuesday’s attendance was 24,237.

ALLTECH FEI WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES BEGIN IN ONE MONTH

LEXINGTON, KY—30 Days to Go—With just one month to go until the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, ticket sales and hospitality purchases are ramping up as spectators from around the world prepare to witness world championship competition in eight equestrian sports.

Dressage Freestyle Price Level A has officially sold out for the world championship final on Friday, October 1. Less than 1000 tickets remain in Price Level B for that same event.

Additionally, less than 150 tickets remain in the Reining Individual Final on Thursday, September 30.

While tickets for finals rounds continue to sell most rapidly, tickets are still available for early sessions of competition in all eight disciplines. The Games hospitality program has sold out of Champions Club tables for Jumping. Suites for the entire Reining competition are also sold out. As the Games are rapidly approaching, the Kentucky Horse Park is being transformed to host the world. Temporary seating at several venues has neared completion, many of the 300+ temporary structures have been built, and the Alltech Experience and Kentucky Experience pavilions are taking form.

In addition, national federations for 58 countries have submitted entries for the 2010 Games. Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States have entries for all eight disciplines.

Although the Games won’t commence with the Opening Ceremonies until September 25, athletes and horses will arrive at the Kentucky Horse Park beginning September 10.

After receiving more than 3,000 reports of sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles, the U.S. Department of Transportation has concluded that driver error was actually at fault. According to The Wall Street Journal, investigators analyzing different data recorders from Toyota vehicles found that at the time of these sudden acceleration crashes, the throttles were wide open rather and the brakes were not depressed. Thus, they have reason to believe that drivers were mistakenly stomping on the accelerator rather than slamming the brakes in an attempt to avoid these crashes.

Of the 75 fatal crashes blamed on sudden acceleration, only one incident has actually been verified as being caused by vehicle fault – the Lexus ES350 accident that killed a California highway patrolman and three other passengers last August. Even so, this case was chalked up as an incident where the floor mat trapped the gas pedal, which Toyota quickly issued a recall for.

The WSJ also reports that U.S. Transportation Department officials have stated publicly that they have yet to find any electronic glitches in Toyota vehicles that could lead to these crashes. The only defects proven to be true are those that have been outlined by Toyota itself – floor mats and sticky accelerator pedals that are slow to return to idle.

So while Toyota may not have been at fault in these sudden acceleration cases, the automaker's image has indeed been seriously tarnished over the past few months. Over eight million Toyota vehicles have been recalled worldwide – a large blemish in automotive history, and it appears that much of the hand-wringing may have been for naught. I just came back from a vacation in Texas. Texas is amazing! My husband and I went to the Alamo as well as a few other surrounding missions. We enjoyed the River walk in San Antonio. We also made our way to the Capitol building in Austin and had the chance to see the famous bats (Google that). We visited Houston (my favorite place in Texas) and went to the Space Center, that was an amazing life experience. We also drove up to Corpus Christi and rode horses on the beach and visited the USS Lexington. Yes - we did a lot in 4 days! I needed a vacation from my vacation... pictures soon to come but for now- enjoy my video of riding horses on the beach. Heavy rains in Kentucky leave behind a fun new pond

This weekend was a wet one in Kentucky, the heavy rains produced massive flooding and major damage. One thing the rain did was leave behind a "new pond" in a nearby park.

This spot usually has a little bit of standing water, maybe 2 inches at most, but the rains created a really beautiful little pond.

My dog Mocha decides to check out the water.

Lexington, Ky., April 25 - Beezie Madden, of Cazenovia, N.Y., showed why she's one of the best show jumpers in the world in tonight's $60,000 Kentucky Cup Grand Prix at the Kentucky Horse Park. She guided Danny Boy to a jump-off time of 38.37 seconds to defeat the three other riders who qualified for the deciding round.

Canadian international star Beth Underhill, of King Township, Ont., grabbed second place on Top Gun (39.56), and Laura Teodori, of Tucson, Ariz., took third place on Kasoar D'Uxelles (39.99). Madden also finished fifth on Mademoiselle.

Madden, 47, led the U.S. team to the gold medal in the 2004 and the 2008 Olympics, where she also won the individual bronze medal. At the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, she led the U.S. team to the silver medal and earned the individual silver medal.

The Kentucky Cup Grand Prix was the show jumping test event for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, which will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park September 25 to October 10. On a windy and rainy evening, the lights and the footing were fully tested, along with many other organizational elements. The top riders enthusiastically praised the main arena and the footing, for which construction was completed in the spring of 2009.

"We're used to riding in inclement weather, and with the footing the rain doesn't matter," said Madden. "The arena's fantastic, and with the extra stands that will be here for the World Games, it should make the atmosphere even better."

Underhill, 48, is a veteran of Canadian teams at the Olympics and World Equestrian Games, but she'd never competed at the Kentucky Horse Park before. "I thought this was a perfect amount of atmosphere, and southern hospitality was definitely at its best here, so the World Games should be a spectacular sensation," she said.

Both of Madden's horses are candidates for the U.S. team at the World Games. Danny Boy finished tied for sixth in the selection trials held in Florida during the winter, while Mademoiselle finished ninth. Both horses will campaign in Europe this summer in preparation, along with Madden's Olympic medalist, Authentic.

Underhill hopes to make the Canadian team with Top Gun too, and she came to the Kentucky Cup to acquaint him with the ring, the stables and the environment.

Teodori, 20, is not a U.S. team candidate, but she came to the Kentucky Horse Park to gain international experience. She said she's owned Kasoar D'Uxelles for four years. "He's the horse I did my first grand prix on and my first everything with. He's the horse who's taken me where I am today," she said.

William Fox-Pitt wins the Kentucky Rolex 3Day event

Lexington, Ky., April 25 - William Fox-Pitt of Great Britain concluded the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone, the same way he began it-in first place. As the last rider to start on today's show jumping course, he and Cool Mountain negotiated all 16 jumps perfectly to capture the $80,000 and the Rolex Steel and Gold Oyster Perpetual Timepiece that go to the winner.

Phillip Dutton, of West Grove, Pa., also recorded a clear round on Woodburn to climb from fourth place to second, while Becky Holder, of Chattahoochee, Ga., lowered one rail on Courageous Comet to hold on to third place. Dutton also finished sixth on The Foreman.

Boyd Martin, of West Grove, Pa., completed the event on three horses, placing fifth with Neville Bardos, 11th with Rock On Rose, and 12th with Remington XXV in the record 53-horse starting field. Kim Severson, who'd been standing second after cross-country on Tipperary Liadhnan, fell to 24th with 24 jumping faults and 12 time faults.

Fox-Pitt, 41, had competed at Rolex Kentucky six times previously but hadn't won before. The 6'5" rider will attempt to win the second leg of the Rolex Grand slam next week when he rides two horses in the Mitsubishi Badminton Three-Day Event in England. (The $350,000 prize goes to any rider who can win Rolex Kentucky, Badminton and the Burghley Three-Day Event in England consecutively.)

"I came here hoping for atop-10 placing, and I kept reminding myself of that while I was in the ring today," said Fox-Pitt.

"When you come to a four-star competition like this, you never really know what will happen, but I certainly didn't expect this," he added. "Cool Mountain has come out of this a better horse, and hopefully he'll step up to the [Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games] in the fall."

Second place with Woodburn marked the eighth time that Dutton, 46, has finished in the runner-up position. He won the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2008 on Connaught, meaning that he's finished first or second in nine of the 13 CCI4* competitions run at Rolex Kentucky since 1998.

"Hopefully he'll win one of these things one of these days, but sometimes you're grateful to be second," said Dutton with a wry grin.

Woodburn was a last-minute entry at Rolex Kentucky. Dutton had planned to ride him at Badminton since he had three or four other horses entered here, but the Icelandic volcano eruption that stranded several Rolex Kentucky officials in Europe also kept Europe-bound cargo flights on the ground. The addition of Woodburn meant that Dutton would be riding four horses and required the organizers to juggle the schedule to give him enough time to warm each horse up before cross-country. He withdrew Kheops Du Quesnay after dressage and retired Waterfront on cross-country.

"I'm pleased I made the decision to ride Woodburn here, and I'm thankful to the organizers for squeezing me in," said Dutton.

Third was Holder's best finish ever at Rolex Kentucky, even though she's been near the top after dressage or cross-country several times. Show jumping has been a disappointment for her and Courageous Comet, though.

"I've had a lot of experience being near the top here after cross-country, and there is a growth that happens that allows you to put all those things that distract you to the side and just go do it," said Holder, who was relieved with today's four-fault performance.

Today's attendance was 16,499. The total for the event was 61,828.

Townend Returns To Kentucky Horse Park
British rider Oliver Townend, who fell at cross-country fence 20 on Saturday, was released from the hospital on Sunday morning and watched the show jumping phase at the Kentucky Horse Park on Sunday afternoon. His horse ODT Master Rose, who had been standing in seventh place after cross-country, was not presented at the third horse inspection and was withdrawn from the competition.

William Fox-Pitt holds on to the lead after today's cross country

Lexington, Ky., April 23 - William Fox-Pitt of Great Britain retained the lead he took in dressage by recording a clear cross-country round today on Cool Mountain at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone.

Fox-Pitt's score of 42.8 penalties kept him 2 points ahead of three-time Rolex Kentucky winner Kim Severson on Tipperary Liadhnan (44.8). Becky Holder, on Courageous Comet, is just behind with 45.2 penalties. Severson and Holder each jumped faultless cross-country rounds too.

Two-time Olympic team gold medalist Phillip Dutton, the 2008 Rolex Kentucky winner, stands fourth with The Foreman (47.6) and fifth with Woodburn (47.7). Dutton finished 1 second slow on The Foreman but was faultless on Woodburn. Dutton retired his third mount, Waterfront, on course after a refusal.

Boyd Martin recorded no jumping faults on all three of his mounts today. He finished without time faults on Neville Bardos (eighth place, 51.8) and Rock On Rose (15th place, 59.2) but had 5.2 time faults on Remington XXV (14th place, 59.0).

In anticipation of the forecasted thunderstorms (with a threat of tornadoes), the Rolex Kentucky organizers shortened the cross-country day schedule by canceling the lunch break. Consequently, today's competition was completed by 1:30 p.m., without rain or lightning while the horses were on course. Ten horses finished with no jumping faults inside the optimum time of 11:08. Another 20 horses finished with only time faults.

"He didn't seem overwhelmed by the course at all," said Fox-Pitt, 41, of Cool Mountain, 10. The English-bred Thoroughbred was running his first four-star three-day event. "I wasn't feeling at my best this morning, but he was, and I'm very glad of that because you don't want to throw away a top spot when you're lucky enough to get it. So I'm naturally very happy," he said.

Fox-Pitt said that he is aiming both Cool Mountain and Seacookie, a horse he rode at Rolex Kentucky in 2009, for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park. "Cool Mountain could be a very exciting horse for the autumn, and having been here could only be an advantage," he said.

Severson, 36, of Scottsville, Va., said she was pleasantly surprised to be so near the top. "[Tipperary Liadhnan] has always been a very good cross-country horse, but he got more tired than I thought he would, I think because, as we've seen before, the ground gets more holding as it dries here," said Severson, the Olympic individual silver medalist in 2004. "I think we can have a good show jumping round tomorrow if I can stay out of his way."

Holder, of Chattahoochee, Ga., finished faultlessly despite taking the long route at the second half of the famous Head of the Lake water complex.

"He can be a little bit spooky, and he doesn't like changes in the footing, but as long as I can give him a chance to see where he's going, he'll step up," explained Holder, 41, of her route. "I felt that some of the mistakes in the past were errors of line, so I tried to give him time to see the approaches and read the jumps, and then make it up by galloping between the fences."

The Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event concludes tomorrow with the show jumping phase, for which festivities will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Townend Recovering After Fall

Oliver Townend of Great Britain, riding at Rolex Kentucky to try to win the $350,000 Rolex Grand Slam, fell at fence 20, the Hollow, with sixth-placed Ashdale Cruise Master. Townend, 27, was transported to the University of Kentucky Trauma and Emergency Services-Emergency Department. He was conscious at the time he was transported.

As of 5:00 p.m. EDT, Townend was reported to be up and walking around, and he appeared to be alert.

Ashdale Cruise Mater was examined by attending veterinarians and sustained no injuries.

Earlier in the day, Townend had guided ODT Master Rose to a clear round that was just two seconds slow, putting him in seventh place.

Lexington, Ky., April 22 -- Sashaying in to KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and The Cherry Tree," Tina Konyot's big black horse Calecto V showed their partnership has reached new heights with a decisive win in the 2010 Kentucky Cup CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle, scoring 76.25 percent.

Chris von Martels on Naomi (70.20%) rode into second place, with Jacqueline Brooks on Balmoral close behind in third (67.35%).

"It was great fun [out there]," said Konyot, 48, of Palm City, Fla.

More than 2,200 spectators enjoyed Konyot's performance, highlighted by her Danish-bred stallion's powerful piaffe and expressive canter work, as the pair boogied to such modern faire as Beyonce's "Crazy In Love," and Jennifer Lopez' "Let's Get Loud." Konyot's music featured a voice-over that slightly altered Tunstall's lyrics to state, "Big Black Horse says look at me," which brought a chuckle of approval from the crowd.

Konyot and Calecto had only performed this freestyle twice before, and she admitted that "it still needs more tweaking." Still, she's happy with the result. "I think it's appropriate for him, and I was extremely pleased with him," she said.

It was a great day in more ways than one for Konyot-earlier in the day Lady Shakespeare, a horse trained by her boyfriend, Roger Attfield, won the Bewitched Stakes at nearby Keeneland race course.

Canadian Chris von Martels, 28, Wellington, Fla., and the Dutch Warmblood mare Naomi strutted their stuff in a Spanish-flavored freestyle, which suited the mare's slinky movement and ring presence. Their high placing belies the newness of their partnership-the horse was purchased for von Martels to contest the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, and he's only been riding her for two months.

Canada also claimed third place, with Olympic veteran Jacqueline Brooks, 42, of Cedar Valley, Ont., and her young Hanoverian Balmoral showing off for the crowd to an eclectic mix of music featuring intricate drumming to go along with the his intricate steps.

Brooks and von Martels are both excited about the future of Canadian dressage, headed by newly hired coach Robert Dover. "We're really excited because this is the most depth we've ever had, certainly the most since 1988 [when Canada won the Olympic bronze medal]. Robert has been such a big force in that," said Brooks.

"It's really an exciting time for our country," added von Martels.

All the riders expressed their enthusiasm for the Kentucky Horse Park and hope to be back in September to ride under the lights again in the main arena at the World Games.

"It's a very comfortable venue for the horses, and it was spectacular tonight," said Konyot.

"It's electric but not overwhelming," agreed von Martels. "It's a place of a lifetime."

"It feels intimate, even in such a big stadium," added Brooks. "You actually feel a connection with the spectators."

Lexington, Ky., April 22 - Karen O'Connor and Mandiba have taken the first-day lead at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone, scoring 43.7 penalties.

Becky Holder rode Courageous Comet to second place (45.2), and Phillip Dutton rode The Foreman to third place (47.2).

O'Connor, 52, won the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in 1999, while Dutton, 46, won the 2008 event. All three of the leaders are also Olympic veterans and are among the leading candidates for the U.S. team that will compete at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

O'Connor, of Middleburg, Va., said that Mandiba's performance today was consistent with his other performances so far this year. "He's more confirmed [in his flatwork] than he's ever been, for sure, so I can ride down the centerline with more confidence than ever before," said O'Connor.

"Plus, he's such an elegant horse and has such try in him, so I was just over the moon when we finished the test," added O'Connor about Mandiba, a 10-year-old, Irish-bred Thoroughbred.

Dutton, of West Grove, Pa., said he was "pleased" with The Foreman's test, especially since the 14-year-old, Thoroughbred gelding hasn't competed in a three-day event in almost three years. After winning the 2007 Fair Hill CCI3*, he had surgery to have a splint bone removed on a foreleg and then suffered a series of complications that kept him out of action.

"He's one of the best horse's I've ever had, so you do whatever you can to get him going again. And he always shines in the biggest events," said Dutton. The Foreman is owned by Ann Jones, who has supported Dutton as an owner since shortly after he moved to the United States from his native Australia in 1993.

Dutton also rode Kheops Du Quesney to a tie for 14th place (55.3). Tomorrow he'll ride Woodburn and Waterfront into the main arena.

Holder, 41, and her horses moved from Minnesota to Chattahoochee, Ga., last winter. She's been in the top three after dressage at Rolex Kentucky before but has never won the top prize. She did, however, win the competitors' drawing for a Rolex watch at Wednesday night's welcome reception, and she'd like to take the watch that goes to the Rolex Kentucky winner home with her too.

But she said she's trying not to think about Sunday yet. "It's a long weekend, and this is just the beginning of it. I've been here before, and I'm just planning one day at a time and jumping one jump at a time," said Holder.

Dressage concludes on Friday, starting at 9:30 and ending at 3:36. On Saturday the first horse-Kheops Du Quesnay with Dutton-starts on the cross-country course at 9:30, and the last horse-Waterfront with Dutton-starts on course at 3:30.

The Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone, is America's only four-star competition and is a member of the HSBC Classic Series. The world's best horses and riders vie for $250,000 in prize money and the coveted Rolex Championship.

This year NBC has expanded its television coverage of the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event from 60 to 90 minutes. The program will air on Saturday, May 15, from 3:00 to 4:30 EDT, just prior to the Preakness Stakes.

Lexington, Ky., April 21 - Yesterday Mikala Munter Gundersen experienced the drama inherent in competition. The Danish rider had to cut her warm-up for the Grand Prix short because Leonberg's bit was rubbing his lips, and her groom had to run back to the barn to get another one. Her sixth-placed finish in the Grand Prix was the result.

Today, though, Gundersen had plenty of time to progressively prepare her German Warmblood for his test, and she scored 70.79 percent to claim the Kentucky Cup Grand Prix Special.

"I had so much fun in the ring today. He was with me the whole time," exclaimed Gundersen, 41.

Gundersen and Leonberg were the last to perform today, and their score narrowly eclipsed the two pairs who performed immediately before them. Bonny Bonnello, of Calgary, Ont., boldly rode Pikardi to a score of 70.29 percent, immediately after Pierre St. Jacques, of Anthony, Fla., precisely guided Lucky Tiger to a score of 69.33 percent.

The Kentucky Cup Dressage is the test event for the dressage world championships at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, which will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park from Sept. 25 to Oct. 10.

Bonnello, 59, finished second for the second consecutive day, but she might have finished first if she hadn't performed an incorrect movement late in the test, an error for which each of the five judges must deduct 1 point from their score for that movement.

"[Coach] Robert Dover will never speak to me again if I do that again," said Bonnello. Nevertheless, Bonnello's performance on Pikardi has garnered the pair a place on the Canadian team that will be competing in Europe this summer. She hopes that her performance there will put her on the Canadian team for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Gundersen, who lives in Wellington, Fla., but continues to compete for Denmark, and Leonberg will also return to Europe in preparation for the World Games. She plans to compete in the Danish Championships in July, where the team will be chosen.

St. Jacques, 45, was a member of the U.S. team at the 2005 Pan Am Games, and he hopes to wear the flag again in September. "That's why I came here. I wanted to compete here for the first time, have fun, and get to know the facility," he said.

Gundersen said that the Kentucky Cup fit perfectly into her preparation plans, "and I couldn't wait to get here. I've been here before, and I think it's wonderful."

The Kentucky Cup Dressage concludes on Thursday evening, with eight horses contesting the spectacular Grand Prix freestyle, beginning at 7 p.m.

Spring in Kentucky

As a working photographer, the pictures I create are usually for someone other then myself, some days it just feels good to go out and just shoot for me. That is exactly what I did this weekend. I went out armed with my Canon 5D Mark 11 and my favorite Lensbaby. I wanted to go out and get my creative juices flowing again. My focus for the mission was none other then the blossoming trees that are painting Kentucky's beautiful landscape.

It's no secret, I love my Lensbaby, http://www.lensbaby.com/ The images that I get out of my Lensbaby remind me of my work with the 4x5 film View Camera that I used in one of my photo classes at college. As I mentioned in an earlier post on the view camera, I loved the effect of the tilting bellows. You can achieve similar results with a Lensbaby for a fraction of the cost of a large format View Camera.

Easter at the Bluegrass Barkery 2010

It has been several years since I have been to the Annual Easter Egg hunt at the Bluegrass Barkery on Clay Ave in Lexington. My husband and I (and two dogs) made it to Clay Avenue by 3 pm to join in the fun. There was the blessing of the animals, a costume contest, and an impressive easter egg hunt!

If you have never been to the Barkery (and you have a dog/cat) you are really missing out. They have a wonderful selection of natural foods for your pet. I am feeding my two dogs some food that I purchase from there store and I can't believe the difference good food makes for my little guys.

View Camera

While I was getting my degree in photography I had to take a class that focused on the view camera. I have to admit at first I absolutely dreaded it. The 4x5 view camera was a heavy camera, not just in bulk but it's mechanisms were clumsy. I don't think I had a moment with the view camera that did not result in bruises. I also was frustrated with the film holders and the complicated process in the developing of the film. You get the point... complain complain. Through the frustration of the view camera emerged a new love of photography. I discovered a new world amongst the tilt shifting lenses and bellows of the beast.

I discovered an artist named Keith Carter, http://www.keithcarterphotographs.com/. His images looked like something that had been locked inside of a dream and just waiting to be released.

Baptism - A new life

On a chilly day in April 2009, over 200 people were baptized in the murky little pond that sits quietly behind Southland Christian Church off of Harrodsburg Rd in Lexington. I felt privileged to sit in the grass on that sunny Kentucky afternoon, basking in the sun and witnessing this life changing event.

Peggy - The horse that taught me to ride

I started riding horses when I was nearly 7 years old. That might be late for some of the Kentucky riders but growing up in MA (not the land of horses) it was an early age. As a young kid I wanted everything in my life to revolve around horses. My books, stuffed animals, movies, shirts, you name it- had to all be about horses. I was horse crazy. Still am...

My parents finally gave into my obsession of horses and found a local barn that offered lessons. The name of the barn was Sunny Croft Farms and it was right over the border in Thompson, CT. I still remember the day we went to see the barn for the first time. I had carrots and apples lined in my pockets ready to persuade any horse for their affection. Sadly... I still do this today. Some habits never die. The barn seemed like such a magical place. The smell of horses in the air was sweeter then any perfume money could buy. I never get tired of that scent, something about the smell of a barn energizes my soul.

Meet Peggy. She was the horse who taught me how to ride. The images above were taken at my first riding lesson back in 1981. I had the choice to learn basic english riding or western. That was an easy decision since I wanted to be a cowgirl. For the entire seven years I rode at that barn I think I sat upon an english saddle only once. It wasn't until I was 21 that I learned to ride in an english saddle. It was at that age that I discovered my love for jumping. More on that later. Back to Peggy the horse. She was a patient mare. She was the horse that almost every new comer to the barn learned to ride on. She was sure footed and trusted to take care of all of her riders. She did just that. I didn't ride Peggy all that long, within my first year I moved on to younger and faster horses. Peggy retired some years later and was sold to a family where she could live out her years just being a horse.

Rocher - Not your average chocolate

I met Rocher in 2005. She was a black beauty with big dreamy brown eyes. You probably have heard that she loves her job – yes she loves dressage and it shows. Judging from her energy in the arena, I felt as if she knew she was a star and wanted to make sure everyone else did too. She is a champion famous not only for her generous sized ears that flop around as she moves about the dressage arena, but also for her fantastic career as a dressage horse. I remember watching Rocher during the ribbon ceremony. She stood proud and looked around at the crowd to make sure everyone was looking at her. It's hard to explain but she was looking at the crowd not as "a normal horse would" but a horse who seemingly understood her surrounding. She has such an air of intelligence about her. I half expected her to start talking.

Rocher, you are a magical mare.

Winsome Andante - The wonder horse

His name was Winsome Andante, otherwise known as Dan. It was the year 2005 and it was my first Rolex as a credentialed photographer. Any photographer who has photographed Kentucky Rolex 3Day event knows that shooting this event is not for the weak of heart. You shoot for four long days in completely unpredictable weather. I admit, I had no idea what I was in for. The rain came down hard during dressage, unprepared I only had a trash bag and an rubber band to protect my camera. I didn't mind the rain really... I was overwhelmed by my surroundings and completely immersed in the sound of the roaring crowd. Horse and riders came and went test after test but none of them caught my attention like Kim and Dan. Kim Severson and Winsome Andante passed by the media island after their dressage test and gave an encouraging smile to the sopping wet media folks. You could tell from the reaction of the spectators that this horse and rider team was the beloved favorite. It was a tough Rolex that year. Two days of rain during the dressage phase left a very soggy and dangerous cross country course, not to mention it was bitterly cold on that Saturday in April. I felt like a pioneer woman settling the land, hunger and exhaustion were real as you tried to ignore your basic instincts. Sunday came and with it the sunshine. The Sun was taunting our exposures as it peaked itself in and out of the passing clouds. That year I learned the value of applying sunblock to the my entire hands as they slowly burned in the heat of the afternoon. Sunday is stadium jumping. The day is short and sweet but it is also the last of your exhausting four days of shooting and long nights editing. Alas, it was time for Kim and Dan to complete the final phase of Rolex. The crowd was silent. Jump after jump they cleared them all. I will never forget the moment as Kim and Dan jumped over the final fence. She and Dan knew they had won! I caught that moment on camera, what a treasure. Kim's hand went up in the air in victory and Dan picked up a new speed as they galloped their way to victory. I tried to keep myself together as I held back my tears of joy. I realized that I had witnessed history. My heart was pounding as the crowd came up off of their feet cheering on the victorious winners! Part of me felt like we were all on this adventure together, the crowds, the riders, the horses, and my fellow media - at that moment it felt like we all won.

Winsome Andante you not only touched my life that day but I believe you touched all of our lives. It's hard to believe you did it all over again in 2006. You truly are a wonder horse.

Stoney

If you are not a sappy horse girl... proceed to the next blog. Your eyes will get stuck from rolling in the back of your head as you read my post. If you are a horse crazy girl who secretly wanted to be lost on the island with the Black Stallion, then read on.

This is Stoney. He was my first "real" horse love. I need to distinguish "real life horse love" from "horse on TV love." God only knows I was in love with the Black Stallion the moment he came rearing upon the movie screen in 1979, he was the horse who first set my heart dreaming. Anyway back to "real love". Ahhhhh we never forget our first loves, do we? I won't forget this horse either. My husband and I met Stoney at a local public park here in Lexington, Kentucky several years ago. Stoney was always the first horse in his pasture to come to the fence and greet you with a warm welcome. He was very friendly as he was always looking for a handout. He was a beautiful horse. I remember thinking his colors reminded me of a Coca-Cola can because of the frosted effervescent pattern of white hair that seemingly swirled upon his richly colored red coat. My husband and I would frequent this park often and came to know Stoney quite well. After a while Stoney would see me coming in the distance or hear my voice and he would come galloping over to the fence and wait for me to come and visit with him. He would sit quietly as I would pet his face or pick the burs out of his forelock. He loved the attention I lavished on him. I believe that Stoney loved me and I loved him. He was the first horse that ever felt like he was "mine," sadly he was owned by someone else who kept him at the park. My relationship with Stoney continued over the next year. I would visit him almost every weekend and the same thing would happen, he would hear my voice and come galloping at full speed to greet me. Just hearing the sound of his pounding hooves flying over the grass filled my heart with joy. I had a countless number of eye rollers and doubters who would listen to my stories of the red pony, some of those doubters would say, "of course he comes to you, you feed him." True... but last time I checked every horse owner feeds their horses. Do all of your horses come running to greet you? Didn't think so... So as you see my relationship with Stoney was special. I would love to bring new people with me to meet Stoney and witness for themselves the horse who would run to me. A few of my "non nostalgic" horse friends, who observed our relationship, said they never saw anything like it. Our relationship was truly unique. One day, on chilly afternoon, I went to the pasture to visit Stoney. I called his name but this time he did not come running. The sound of pounding hooves could not be heard, everything was silent. I looked around the pasture franticly for him but the little red horse was gone. Turns out his owner sold him to a college student out at Midway. My heart was broken. I cried for months... maybe even years.. oh wait maybe even right now... As long as I live I will never forget that red horse. Stoney will be in my heart forever...

Horse Crazy

I have been trying avoid the horrible Kentucky winter weather outside, so I have been busy doing some much needed organization in my office. I came across this old horse show photo of me as a kid. I think I was nine years old here. Vertically challenged, even as an adult my height seems almost comical as I sit upon this large gray mare. My magnificent mount was a sweet girl named Apple Pie. She was such a great horse. I remember her very fondly. She understood verbal commands and did everything you asked of her. She was such a treasure.

I had the idea of continuing to post pictures of all the horses that have touched my heart over the years. Stay tuned!

New beginnings for 2010

As 2009 comes to a close I always like to look back upon the year and reflect on the special times in my life. I was able to accomplish a long time dream of finishing my college degree. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University this fall with my bachelor degree in Fine Art Photography. It was such a magical moment for me to put on that cap and gown and reach for my diploma. Here is a picture of my husband and I after the graduation ceremony.

I would also like to take a moment and thank all of my wonderful clients who make Jennifer Munson Photography possible. I truly appreciate your business and continued support. I am so thankful for each and every one of you.

So many things to look forward to this year. I especially can't wait for the Alltech World Equestrian Games! I am so lucky to have this monumental event in virtually my backyard. I am excited not only for the competition, but putting Lexington Kentucky on the map as an elite equestrian landmark.

The biggest moment for me for 2010 is the launch of Jennifer's Weddings. I have spent this last year shooting weddings and beautiful brides. When I was four years old, I saw my first pony at a county fair in Massachusetts. It was one of those “live” carousel rides where the diminutive beauties were all tethered-up to a pony sweep that walked them in a continuous circle. I remember standing there, my hands firmly clutched to the metal fence, intently watching those ponies walk around and around. I was utterly mesmerized. Each pony wore a little western saddle and had a child riding blissfully on it’s back. The experience was a tremendously powerful one. From that moment on, my heart danced with excitement at the discovery of the equine world. The day after the fair, I pulled out my crayons and paper and began to draw a pony. I felt a deep desire to retrace every detail of this new magical creature that would forever be a part of my existence.

The magic of the horse has never ended for me. My endless passion for horses is embedded in my soul and is expressed through my photographs. Photography for me has always been about capturing the beauty of the equine world. The magnificent spirit of the horse and its enchanting presence has forever inspired my dreams and is the subject of my work.

“Spirit Equus” is a deliberate portrayal of the ethereal character of the horse. In this series, each image was carefully selected because it captured the dramatic expression and movement of the idealized horse.

April's family was so much fun to be around, esp her husband Ronnie. The whole family had me laughing so hard that at one point it was difficult to hold my camera and continue to photograph all the fun! Even Tia the horse played into all the excitement by trying to eat the broom!

Downs After Dark

For the first time in history Churchill Downs has opened its doors for night time racing. If you have not been out to experience night racing at the Downs then put on your favorite dress/pants and head out the doors tonight. Churchill opened it's doors after hours for 3 separate nights - this being the last. It's such a unique experience. The above photo was taken last week from our box seats. What a view! I hope Churchill Downs continues to hold it's night races in the future. You never know Keeneland might just start catching on to this trend. How amazing would that be? Hey guys head on out and support the horse industry.

As for me... well, I am off to the races!

Kentucky Horse Park prepares for the 2010 World Equestrian Games

On a recent shoot for USDF I was contracted to photograph some of the new buildings at the Kentucky Horse Park. Folks, if you have not been to KHP in awhile you are in for a real treat. The New Rolex Stadium is truly amazing. I am willing to bet that It will knock your socks off! This new stadium is nothing less then a work of art. I had the privilege of photographing the first Rolex to be hosted in this stadium this past April. In May I had the honor of photographing my dear friend Hayli Strickland's wedding. Hayli and I met at Eastern. We were lab partners in our Astronomy class. When we both showed up on the lawn at EKU with a large stack of flash cards in our hands to study- I knew we were going to become good friends. That is exactly what happened.

It's such an honor to be hired to photograph someone's wedding, especially a good friends. A wedding photographer experiences a wedding in such a unique way. We become almost as involved as the Bride & Groom. We have the privilege of capturing all the details of the day as well as the emotion in everyone's hearts...

Hayli and Steven... thank you so much for making me a part of your special day. Thank you for trusting me to capture the magical moments of your life.

Rolex 2009 is just around the corner! I can't wait for the excitement to begin. To everyone who is coming in to town for this event I think you will be very excited to see all the new changes around the Kentucky Horse Park. KHP has been busy preparing for the 2010 WEG. If you haven't been here in a while you just might not recognize this place!

This will be my 5th year shooting at Rolex professionally and each year I get more and more excited for the event to come. I feel honored to be able to shoot some of the top riders in the world.

Bluegrass Barkery and Jennifer Munson Photography are teaming up once again for a fund raiser to raise money in support of the Canine Cancer Research Foundation. Jennifer Munson lost her beloved dog Spike in 2007 to a long six year battle with cancer.

We will be doing portrait sessions with your beloved pooches starting

Sunday November 30th from 1-6.

and

Sunday December 7th from 1-6

and

Sunday December 14th from 1-6.

Kids, cats, and all dogs welcome! There is no limit on the number of pets you bring.

You will have your choice of three different pictures packages to choose from.

You must sign up for a portrait session due to an overwhelming demand last year.

The portraits will take place at Bluegrass Barkery’s second location. The address is 152 West Tiverton Way, Suite 180. Right next to The Melting Pot.

Call ahead and put down your name on the sign up sheet or just drive on over and see the beautiful location for yourself.
