~SPIRIT EQUUS~

When I was four years old, I saw my first pony at a county fair in Massachusetts. It was one of those “live” carousel rides where the diminutive beauties were all tethered-up to a pony sweep that walked them in a continuous circle. I remember standing there, my hands firmly clutched to the metal fence, intently watching those ponies walk around and around. I was utterly mesmerized. Each pony wore a little western saddle and had a child riding blissfully on it’s back. The experience was a tremendously powerful one. From that moment on, my heart danced with excitement at the discovery of the equine world. The day after the fair, I pulled out my crayons and paper and began to draw a pony. I felt a deep desire to retrace every detail of this new magical creature that would forever be a part of my existence.

The magic of the horse has never ended for me. My endless passion for horses is embedded in my soul and is expressed through my photographs. Photography for me has always been about capturing the beauty of the equine world. The magnificent spirit of the horse and its enchanting presence has forever inspired my dreams and is the subject of my work.

“Spirit Equus” is a deliberate portrayal of the ethereal character of the horse. In this series, each image was carefully selected because it captured the dramatic expression and movement of the idealized horse.

The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire. ~Sharon Ralls Lemon

3rd Annual Fundraiser for Canine Cancer

Tis the season for me to start gearing up for our annual Canine Cancer fund raiser. Jennifer Munson Photography and the Bluegrass Barkery team up for their 3rd Annual canine cancer Santa portrait fundraiser. Jennifer Munson Photography will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the National Canine Cancer Foundation in memory of her beloved dog Spike. Spike lost her Six-year battle with cancer in 2007. The dates for the fund raiser are Nov 21, 28, 29 & Dec 5. To reserve your favorite pets photo shoot with Santa, sign up at the Bluegrass Barkery West Tiverton Store. Sign up now while limited spaces are still available. We had 3 long days of photo shoots last year and could not get to the people on our waiting list. It's better to sign up now instead of waiting another year for your Santa photos. http://www.bluegrassbarkery.com/

A night with the Baxter family!

I was so excited to photograph April Baxter and her magical Andalusians Tia and Indira. Even though the sunlight was less than perfect last night we were able to capture some beautiful timeless photographs of April and her amazing horses.

April's family was so much fun to be around, esp her husband Ronnie. The whole family had me laughing so hard that at one point it was difficult to hold my camera and continue to photograph all the fun! Even Tia the horse played into all the excitement by trying to eat the broom!

To see more of April's Andalusians and adventures just visit her website at www.aprilsandalusians.com

Downs After Dark

For the first time in history Churchill Downs has opened its doors for night time racing. If you have not been out to experience night racing at the Downs then put on your favorite dress/pants and head out the doors tonight. Churchill opened it's doors after hours for 3 separate nights - this being the last. It's such a unique experience. The above photo was taken last week from our box seats. What a view! I hope Churchill Downs continues to hold it's night races in the future. You never know Keeneland might just start catching on to this trend. How amazing would that be? Hey guys head on out and support the horse industry.

As for me... well, I am off to the races!

In May I had the honor of photographing my dear friend Hayli Strickland's wedding. Hayli and I met at Eastern. We were lab partners in our Astronomy class. When we both showed up on the lawn at EKU with a large stack of flash cards in our hands to study- I knew we were going to become good friends. That is exactly what happened.

It's such an honor to be hired to photograph someone's wedding, especially a good friends. A wedding photographer experiences a wedding in such a unique way. We become almost as involved as the Bride & Groom. We have the privilege of capturing all the details of the day as well as the emotion in everyone's hearts...

Hayli and Steven... thank you so much for making me a part of your special day. Thank you for trusting me to capture the magical moments of your life.

I also want to thank my very talented friends who joined me on this journey. Kelly Brown of J.A.Y.S.Photography. All your endless hours of research and attention to detail made the wedding day go seamless. Your photographs are as beautiful as you are. Danita Rogers of Danita Rogers Photography. Your amazing creative ideas and ability put me at ease all day. You are one of the most talented and kindest people I know. I will swear forever that you are my gal pal soulmate. Thank you for hosting the wedding images on your website. Michael Seavers of Michael Seavers Photography. Your talent and endless devotion to the technical side of photography kept our gear running smoothly all day. Your pictures are beautiful. Never doubt yourself. Thank you guys.
